Question by Eric W: Is there a benefit to feeding organic dog food to a dog that’s been diagnosed with cancer? What kind is best?

Best answer:

Answer by Derek
Organic is good. I had a rottweiler that had, among other things, Alzheimer’s and the vets recommended that I give her organic dog food. It is more expensive but seems to be healthier. I’ll be honest though that I did not notice any difference but the vet said that it was better.

Question by Sara: My dog might have cancer… any advice?
A few days ago I found a growth on my dog’s paw and took her to the vet to find out what it was. They took a cell sample and sent it to cytology and the results came back today. They’re pretty certain it’s sarcoma, but are going to biopsy the growth on Friday.

I’d like some advice if you have any. Anyone had a dog with cancer? Did they recover? What kind of treatment did they undergo?

BTW, my dog is a 2 and half y.o. female Italian Greyhound.

Question by Club soda not seals: Dog with cancer on steroids having diarrhea all over the house.?
Have any of you ever had a dog with cancer? My Mom’s dog has cancer in his neck. The vet prescribed steroids to take down the swelling. Ever since then the dog has had severe diarrhea. At night the dog poos all over her carpets.

She just cleans it up and is not mad because she loves the dog so much. She knows it is not Buddy’s fault.

Is the diarrhea a symptom of the steroids, his declining health from the cancer, the cancer itself or what? Is there anything she can do until she gets him back to the vet on Tuesday?

Any advice (except rude comments, which I will report) would be greatly appreciated. Buddy has been a wonderful dog and we want his last weeks or months to be good for him. Thank you in advance for answering this question.
Thank all of you who have given such heart felt answers. They are really helpful. It is going to be so hard to pick the best answer.

I will have her try the cottage cheese and rice thing.

We are going to have him put to sleep. I guess she just wants to hold on a little longer. Other than the trots he is still ok for right now.

Yes, we went through this. It can be either from the cancer (depending on the kind – ours had lymphosarcoma) or from the meds. Either way, it’s no fun for the dog or your mom. We were pretty close to the end when this was happening. We had our dog on a bland diet of cottage cheese and white rice (recommended by our vet) to control it as much as possible. I’m so sorry.
