Question by drewski0028: Dogs sniffing weirdness?
Hi all thank you for reading this I am just curious about this and wondering if anyone else has had this problem… or weird noticing it lol cause I’m not sure why i noticed it but it seemed weird to me. I walk dogs and I’ve been for the past three years.. it’s fun to me and pays my bills… anyway. I have a pup of my own and she is 3 yrs old and German Shepherd/Lab mix. She is VERY smart and it scares me sometimes…. but because of this is why i am worried.
Two days ago I noticed my feet were a bit swollen… well one in particular (left) and I didn’t know why, I do sit a lot… but walk. They don’t hurt and I’m thinking it’s cause of my period… lmao why I don’t know but hoping. I really don’t like going to the doctor and basically can’t till it’s a emergency.. I know sad.. I need a better job but anyways, so after I notice this I come home and my dog was steady sniffing that foot in the swollen part hard core .. I moved her and then she went back… for a good min and then after that she never did it again BUT taht still was like woah… weird.
THEN the day after the two dogs I walk, one of them steady sniffed that same foot in the same spot again! for a good minute till moved! so I’m like SHIIIIT dogs can sniff cancer and stuff…. soo I hope i’m gonig crazy and taking this dogs sniffing cancer stuff a little too coincidincly if ya know what I mean. but … just wonder what people thoughts are on that … Thank You!!!!!!!

Answer by Cowgirl Kristin This is normal. I can’t tell you whats wrong with you, but nothing is wrong with your dog! I broke my toe last week, and my dog just won’t stop licking it! He knows something is wrong with you, its just in their nature to want to comfort you.

Question by kimsgerbils: Having pets in college.. 2 dogs vs. 1?
So I’ve had my dog for a while, she’s a 5 year old bernese mix. She has a rare type of cancer but it’s been under control. For the last year while I was at college, a woman I know was babysitting her and she had 2 other dogs there and my dog really began to enjoy their company while the people were away. My predicament is, I know having a dog with cancer costs more and there’s a higher risk of losing them sooner, but I’ve been looking at local rescues and emailing a few to see about large breed mixes they have. She’s always loved tumbling and cuddling with other “big dumb mutts” (as my family calls her, lovingly) and although this semester won’t be any busier, it will be different because she will be moving here with me into a pet-friendly apartment. They have wood floors, larger hallways, a dog park, dog baths in the laundry room, and even local hiking trails/fields nearby. I’ve had two dogs at once before but would this be too much for college? I’ll have a roommate who loves dogs as well and would be able to help with the walking and attention giving, but since neither of them would be puppies do you guys think this would be ok? Two adult dogs left alone with toys and each other for 4-6 hours a day should be ok, right? I’d be sure to give them adequate walks before and after class and I am a pre-vet student so although classes are hard, some of them (and my clubs) allow you to bring along pets if they’re well mannered. What do you guys think?

From the Society of Environmental Journalists’ 2010 annual conference, in Missoula, Montana: Conservation biologist Megan Parker trains dogs to find endangered and invasive species by sniffing out scat (bears, snow leopard) or even the creatures themselves (snails, noxious weeds). It’s an inspired twist on the age-old practice of using dogs’ extraordinary sense of smell to find game, criminals, bombs, even cancer. She gave us a demo with her Belgian shepherd Pepin in a field outside of Missoula, where she’d planted black bear scat. Video produced as part of the conference’s great video training workshop.

Question by Danni: What are the causes of lung cancer in dogs?
I found out today that my 8 year old mini poodle has lung cancer. The vet gave him about a month. It’s absolutely devastating. But what they didn’t answer is how he got it. Are the causes for lung cancer the same in dogs as it is in humans? If so, how did he get it? Nobody in our house smokes, and he’s never been exposed to harmful inhalants. I just want to know if there is anything we did to make him sick, because we have another dog and I do not want him to meet the same fate.
Best answer:
Answer by SifuGreg Unfortunately the world we live in and subject our dogs to is often the cause and in other cases , there is no specific cause. You can read more about it from http://www.vetinfo.com/lung-cancer-dogs.html. I’m so very sorry for the news. I too, have lost several animals to various forms of cancer over the years.
